Almost every week someone asks us to build a school or clinic management system from scratch. Perhaps one in six actually needs one.

Start by listing what you do, not what you want

Write down every task the software must handle. Now mark the ones that are genuinely unusual for your industry — not "we do it slightly differently", but genuinely unusual. If fewer than a fifth are marked, a ready-made system fits you.

What licensing gets you

A system that has already been used by real staff, at roughly a quarter of the cost, live in days rather than months. The bugs that matter have already been found by someone else.

What custom gets you

Software shaped exactly around your workflow, which matters when that workflow is your competitive advantage — an unusual admission process, an unusual billing model, integration with existing hardware.

The middle path most people should take

Licence the closest system and pay for modifications. You get eighty percent working immediately, and the twenty percent that is specific to you built properly on top. That is what most of our education and healthcare clients end up doing.
